A Statistical Analysis of the Expired Patients over 60 Years of Age in the Intensive Care Unit

Abstract
Recently the life expectancy has dramatically increased due to improved medical care and socioeconomic level. The number of the elderly population and he elderly patients are increasing.
In contrast to younger patients., the elderly patients may manifest more than one pathologic process and a decline in physiologic function of various organs. So elderly patients may be at greater risk for morbidity and mortalities.
We analyzed 1419 patients aged over 60 years of age who was admitted to the ICU at Korea University An-am Hospital from march 1992 to Feburary 1995.
@ES The results are as follows;
@EN 1) Consisting of 744 males(52.4%)and 675 females (47.6%).
2) The most common age group was that of 60 to 69 years of age (54.2%).
3) The mumber of patients who were admitted to the department of internal medicine was 834 cases(58.7%), which was highest among all departments.
4) The incidence of operated patients was 19.8% in 1992, 23.5% in 1993, 27.2% in 1994 and overall incidence was 23.4%.
5) The overall CPR rate was 14.2% and success rate of CPR was 0.4%.
6) The mortality of total ICU patients was 13% during the 3 years. The Mortality of patients aged ober 60 years was 23.2% in 1992, 18.2% in 1993 and 17.1% in 1994. It has decreased annually but higher that mortality of total ICU patients.
7) The causes of death were malignant neoplasm, cerebrovascular disease and cardiovascular disease which were 34.9%, 19.1%, 15.1% respectively.
8) The common involved organ of malignant neoplasm were lung, stomach and hepatobiliary system which were 26.8%, 23.7%, 19.6% respectively.
